When a Google Ads campaign spends money without producing enough business, the fix usually isn’t one button in the account. It is usually a break somewhere between the search, the ad, the landing page, and the action you measure. Work through that path in order before adding budget or changing bid strategies.
Start with the outcome, not the click
Decide which actions should count as success: purchases, qualified inquiries, booked appointments, or calls that meet a useful threshold. Then check how Google Ads records them. Google’s conversion measurement guide covers website actions, calls, and other conversion types.
Watch for inflated results. A page view, button click, or form start can be useful diagnostic information, but it is not the same as a sale or a completed lead. If the campaign is optimized toward an easy action, the reported cost per conversion can improve while revenue stays flat.
For lead generation, estimate an acceptable cost per qualified lead. One way to start is:
Expected gross profit from a new customer × the share of qualified leads that become customers = an upper bound for lead acquisition cost.
If a new customer contributes $2,000 in gross profit and one in four qualified leads buys, the upper bound is $500 before accounting for overhead and profit targets. Your actual target should be lower. This calculation gives you a business reason to raise or cut spend.
Look at the searches you paid for
Your keywords are the terms you target; search terms are the words people actually typed. Google’s search terms report helps you see where ads appeared and which searches produced results. Some low-volume searches are omitted for privacy, so treat the report as a useful view rather than a complete transcript.
Read the report for patterns. Are you paying for research when you sell an implementation service? Are people looking for jobs, definitions, or free tools? Add negative keywords for clear mismatches, and move valuable searches into more focused groups with ads and pages that match them. Google also recommends reviewing search terms and using negative keywords to reduce irrelevant traffic.
Narrow the geography and the offer
Check whether the campaign is reaching places where you can actually serve customers. A business that sells only in Florida should not assume every impression outside Florida is useful. Review the location settings and the location performance report, then tighten targeting where the data supports it.
Separate materially different offers. “Shopify store redesign” and “Shopify maintenance” may attract different buyers and call for different landing pages. One broad campaign can hide which offer makes money and which one consumes budget.
Make the landing page answer the ad
The ad creates an expectation. The page must fulfill it quickly. If the ad promises a specific service, that service should be clear in the first screen, with proof and an obvious next step. Google’s landing page guidance recommends matching the ad, keywords, and page closely.
Check the page on a phone. Make sure the form works, the booking calendar loads, and calls are easy to place. A campaign can have relevant traffic and still lose customers through a confusing page or broken conversion path.
Review the right numbers each week
Use a short weekly review: spend, qualified leads or sales, cost per result, search terms, and landing page conversion rate. If clicks are healthy but conversions are weak, inspect the page and offer. If many searches are irrelevant, fix targeting. If leads are plentiful but sales don’t follow, review lead quality with the sales team.
Avoid changing several major settings at once. Make a clear change, note the date, and compare performance after enough data has accumulated. Google Ads can help you buy attention; the full customer journey determines whether that attention pays off.
